Land Use Planner

Hirschler is seeking a Land Use Planner to join our Real Estate team.  This position can be based in any of our offices in Richmond, Fredericksburg or Tysons, VA, with a preference for Fredericksburg.  This position will provide support to all three locations and travel may be required across offices for business needs.  In this role, you will work closely with attorneys to manage large, multi-disciplinary projects through the zoning and entitlement process and other land use development matters.  The ideal candidate will be skilled at coordinating efforts between attorneys, clients, consultants and municipal staff. 

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Prepare applications and documentation for land use matters (zoning relief, changes, approvals, ordinances, property searches). 

Draft findings, project descriptions, statements of justification, conduct code research, and review land use plans.

Review and direct technical consultants on zoning exhibits and plats.

Manage state and local lobbying registration and reporting.

Prepare economic disclosure statements, affidavits, and interact with municipal staff to monitor zoning application reviews.

Assist in document preparation for property acquisition, development, finance, and disposition.

Support land development and subdivision approval processes, including rezoning and variances.

Prepare and update graphics and maps, attend planning meetings, and present to boards and community groups as needed.

Candidates should have:

Bachelor’s degree in Land Use Planning or related field preferred, or paralegal certificate or commensurate experience in a related field.

3-5 years of experience supporting a Real Estate practice group, a municipal or private-sector setting fulfilling a land use and planning role or combination thereof.

Demonstrated knowledge of land, community, public or economic development, land use, zoning or planning along with competency in planning principles and practices. 

In-depth knowledge of planning processes, with the ability to learn relevant laws, codes, and ordinances. 

Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook); document management system experience helpful.

Strong organizational, project management, and time management skills; attention to detail.
