In an article published by SHRM Online on July 7, Jaime Wisegarver shared insights on how employers should respond when employees’ spouses express concerns over workplace safety related to COVID-19.
For employees with high-risk family members at home, employers might consider a policy that allows employees to request leave or accommodations. However, granting leave to employees who have high-risk relatives they often visit but don’t live with can lead to different problems. These could include complaints from other employees that accommodations are not being granted fairly. Wisegarver adds that employers granting leave to employees in this circumstance may soon find themselves inundated with leave requests.
