At least in Goochland and Henrico Counties, landowners may be afforded a short, pandemic-related reprieve from real property taxes. On May 5 and May 12, respectively, the Goochland and Henrico Boards of Supervisors will vote on proposed ordinances and resolutions implementing short-term relief from real property tax installments due June 5, 2020.
The Goochland County ordinance would exempt from late payment penalties and interest any payments received on or before July 5, 2020. Payments received after July 5, but before August 1, 2020, would be subject to a 10% late payment penalty but no interest thereon. Payments received on or after August 1, 2020, would be subject both to the late payment penalty as well as interest on the total tax and penalties due from that date until paid at the annual rate of 10%.
The Henrico County ordinance would exempt from penalty or interest any tax payment received on or before August 5, 2020. Thereafter, late payment penalties and interest would be assessed as normal.
As of April 27, no comparable relief is under consideration in either Charles City County, Chesterfield County, Hanover County, New Kent County, or the City of Richmond.
Stay tuned for the outcome of the Goochland and Henrico votes and any similar proposals in other Richmond-metro localities.
